Tiahrt wins national committeeman race, retains political viability

Former eight-term Kansas Congressman Todd Tiahrt won election as a GOP state committeeman in a vote today in Topeka.

Tiahrt won election on the first ballot after grabbing exactly 100 votes from the Republican State Committee (90 were needed), according to a tally called into Prime Buzz.

He defeated Kris van Meteren, who grabbed 55 votes and Randy Duncan, who won 24.

Tiahrt, who lost a tough GOP primary race for the U.S. Senate last summer to Jerry Moran, was the pick of new Gov. Sam Brownback.

By winning, Tiahrt keeps his name out front if another political opportunity presents itself (think U.S. Senate) the next few years.

T♥ supporters continue to comfort us and lift our spirits with outpourings of love, posting photos of our family as their Facebook profile pics, and sending us such encouraging words.

We're ok, but we are sad that we didn't win for you. You fought for true Constitutional Conservative principles of smaller government and more personal freedom and we wanted my dad to go to the Senate to continue that fight for you.

2010 was not his time, but he and my mom will continue to do what they can to restore this great country. As Justin Broker so aptly said "You can take the Tiahrt out of Congress but you can't take the fight, dedication to Kansas values, and conservative leadership out of the Tiahrt."

Here are a few of the other messages reminding us that despite the $4.5 million+ spent making untruthful attacks, Kansans know who Todd Tiahrt really is...

Campaigning Tiahrt-Style, Past and Present

This post is by my best friend since childhood, Kelly Reynolds. Kelly is an Andale High School alum and campaigner extraordinaire. We grew up just over a mile from each other in Goddard and spent lots of time together as kids on the campaign trail with my family. She can scoop ice cream and throw parade candy with the best of them. Thanks Kelly, for this post, the many fond memories and years of friendship and support.

Campaigning Tiahrt-Style, Past and Present

I met the Tiahrt family when Jessica and I were in the first grade at St. Mark's Elementary. We became the best of friends, bonding over our mutual love of Little House on the Prairie, making home movies and our general lack of athletic ability. When Todd decided to run for Congress in 1994, I was excited to help the Tiahrts campaign. I didn't understand the national political movements or the party apparatus (I was 13) but I saw something very special. Every weekend my parents would drop me off at the Tiahrt's house in Goddard and we would pack up their van with American flag fruit trays, cookies, ice tea, and ice cream. Lots and lots of ice cream.

We would stop at small towns all over the 4th district for "Ice Cream Socials." Todd would talk and answer questions and the rest of us would serve up the ice cream. We would stay until Todd and Vicki had answered every question and listened to every concern the people had for our great state and country. I was inspired by the people I met, I believe we all were.

That summer Todd wore holes in his shoes going door-to-door, meeting the people of the 4th district and listening. Todd, his family, and small staff pulled off a huge upset and won against all odds. He won because he was the right man, he did the hard work, and most of all, he listened.

I was inspired by that summer and how the Tiahrts campaigned. I became passionate about politics and went on to get my political science degree from KU. A couple of years later I found myself campaigning as a staffer. I learned many new tools and tricks of the trade but I always came back to the lessons I had learned years earlier in the small towns of Kansas with the Tiahrts.

I was blessed this past weekend to hit the Kansas Trail with the Tiahrts again. It felt like old times. I even wore my same red Tiahrt t-shirt from '94!

It was wonderful to be back campaigning for Todd. I always feel invigorated to be campaigning for the right person. We are blessed to have such a wonderful person and family to represent us here in Kansas. I am excited to be here to witness something very special again this year.

Thanks guys, you know I will always be on Team Tiahrt!

Todd Tiahrt Speaks to Thunderous Applause at Olathe GOP Picnic

On Saturday, June 26 the Olathe Republican Party hosted their annual picnic and straw poll. Candidates from Kansas’ Third Congressional District and those running statewide were invited to attend, pass out literature, and set up booths. Each candidate was also given a small allotment of time to speak.

I had worked that morning at the Edgerton, KS parade, so I arrived right after the picnic started – hundreds of people were already there, talking with candidates and their volunteers. The first thing I noticed, however, wasn’t the delicious smell of hamburgers being grilled by State Representative Arlen Siegfreid, but the sheer number of red Tiahrt shirts! With the estimated 800 or so in attendance, over a quarter were wearing the signature Tiahrt red, while nearly a hundred more proudly displayed their Tiahrt stickers.

Throughout the late morning and early afternoon, the buzz built as it neared time for Congressman Tiahrt to address the red shirt-saturated crowd. People were constantly coming up to our booth to speak with the Congressman and to snap a picture with our proudly displayed life-sized cutout of Gov. Sarah Palin, one of Rep. Tiahrt’s most recent endorsements – a list filled with conservative super-stars that builds daily.

When the Congressman was finally able to take the stage a few minutes after 1:30, the crowd erupted in to the loudest screaming, applause, and cheering heard for any candidate – many times over. In fact, Rep. Tiahrt was unable to begin speaking for over a minute as the crowd slowly quieted down enough to hear the microphone.

Todd spoke of our need as a nation to return to stalwart conservative values and of the ever-growing list of leaders and voters who have endorsed him. He discussed how he spent over ten hours on the floor of the House of Representatives fighting endlessly and tirelessly against Pres. Obama’s so-called healthcare reform package (while his opponent recorded videos outside the Capitol).

With the determination he used to fight to destroy the government takeover of healthcare, the dedication he used to never vote for a stimulus package, a bailout, or a tax increase, and the inspiration he gained from working to make a starting position as an underclassman on his high school football team, Todd Tiahrt will do something D.C. hasn’t seen in years. He’ll bring common sense to the madness. It’s not so much how long you’ve been in Washington, but how much Washington is in you.

With thundering interruptions every forty-five seconds, the Congressman was nearly unable to finish his speech during the allotted time. Those in attendance clung to his every word, cheering as loudly as possible. When he finished, they chanted “Tiahrt! Tiahrt! Tiahrt!” and applauded him for two solid minutes before the announcer was forced to re-take the stage.

As if anyone needed reminding of the incredible momentum building behind the Tiahrt campaign, Todd won an astronomical 73.6% of the straw poll vote, besting his opponent by an almost three-to-one margin, proving once again that he is the REAL DEAL for Kansas.

Poll numbers and million dollar war chests can give a candidate a sense of security and air of confidence during a campaign. But what does the old Beatles song say…can’t buy me love? Well, money can’t buy you grassroots support either. Try that and you’ll end up with Astroturf.

In campaigning, nothing is more exciting and inspiring than to watch a grassroots movement spread through the state like wildfire. And I’m not talking about a contained, controlled, Flint Hills fire!

On the Trail with a Future Leader for Tiahrt

He may be young, but Jace knows he has a vested interest in the future of Kansas and our great country. Jace is one of the many friends we've made along the Kansas Trail and a Real Deal grassroots supporter!

His interest in politics and conservative principles brought him to support my dad in the Senate race. And being in the right place at the right time brought Jace to the Cowley County Republican Party Picnic where he stumped for Dad. Here's his story...

When I showed up and the Cowley County Republican Party Picnic, I never intended to speak.

After a brief conversation with another Tiahrt supporter, I was asked to speak on Todd's behalf and happily accepted.

I told the crowd about Congressman Tiahrt's A+ rating from the NRA, about his pro-life work, and his record of never raising taxes.

I asked those who opposed ObamaCare to raise their hands. When every hand shot up I said, "So does Todd. In fact, he spent 10 hours on the House Floor fighting against the bill while our opponent stood outside filming a campaign commercial."

I explained to the crowd that Kansas must send a Conservative to the Senate. We can't expect New York, Maine, or California to do so!

It was last minute and it might not have been my best speech, but I was happy to share the reasons that I support Todd Tiahrt for Senate. And I enjoyed the conversation and the warm reception from Cowley County Republicans.

A Chance Encounter for Elsha

The Separation of States

Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought this would happen.

Vicki and I attended the KSRA Convention this past weekend and we were introduced to the NRA’s Past President John Siglar and his wife Ingrid. Finding a person who can speak my native language is one thing, but to find out that she came over the same time I did is amazing.

In June of 1956, my mother and father along with my eight siblings were part of what is known as “volksverhuizing” or mass immigration to the United States, Canada and Australia. My parents left everything behind that was their comfort zone to a place that was to give my family opportunity and freedom.

The S.S. Zuiderkruis was responsible for transporting 9,200 USA immigrants in 1956, each trip delivering approximately 350 persons. The most interesting account I can give begins with my brothers and sisters hanging on the rail, waving goodbye to all our relatives as we left the port of Rotterdam.

I was excited and I knew my mom and dad were in control. I know my parents had feelings of sadness and uncertainty as they watched Rotterdam slowly drift from the horizon. Their old life was no longer. The possibilities of our new life were both endless and unknown.

I know that it had to have been terrifying for my dad. He had faith and his decision was going to be a positive investment for our future. It was not the easiest thing to do, but to my dad, it was the right thing to do. It says a lot about my dad for he had a lot of faith in God.

The Zuiderkruis gave my family a new life and years later it gives me an interesting plotline for this story… Ingrid Sigler was on the same boat, coming over at the same time, and her family shared the same destiny.

Were it not for traveling the Kansas Trail this election season, I may never have met Ingrid and discovered how our paths crossed on that trip across the Atlantic.

And she likes turquoise jewelry, too!

To Keep and Bear Arms

The Kansas State Rifle Association held their convention in Hutchinson June 11-13. Patricia Stoneking is KSRA’s President and does a first rate job of promoting the 2nd Amendment.

Elsha and I enjoyed meeting many freedom and Constitution loving Kansans. We learned about issues facing gun owners in Kansas, America and around the world. John Siglar and his wife Ingrid came from Delaware to address the convention.

John is an immediate Past President of the NRA and sits on the board. He gave a stirring speech that motivated us to get all gun owners registered to vote and out to the polls. Twice he thanked Todd Tiahrt for his leadership.

The banquet on Saturday night provided an opportunity to tell of Todd's love of hunting and his interest in firearms.

The crowd was very interested to note that in 1994 Todd introduced the first-ever concealed carry bill in Kansas, modeled after Florida law. While the bill failed to garner enough votes to pass that year, it opened the door to today's current concealed carry law in Kansas. I read portions of an old Wichita Eagle story blasting Todd for his initiation of the bill. The first of many negative headlines for his promotion of the 2nd Amendment.

Then recounting Todd’s Congressional work to protect the privacy of every legal gun owner and of law enforcement in the Tiahrt Trace Data Amendment surprised the listeners. They were mostly unaware of the assault by Mayor Bloomberg and his 500 “Mayors Against Guns.” The ads they have run in major liberal newspapers and the billboards are outrageous declaring the Tiahrt Amendment responsible for the death of law enforcement officers, for the Drug War in Mexico, for the Virginia Tech shootings and most recently for the Ft. Hood Shooting.

The abuse Todd has taken is nearly unbelievable with Barack Obama campaigning on overturning the Tiahrt Amendment and then Eric Holder testifying before Congress that the Amendment is responsible for all kind of evils. It is apparent to any open-minded listener, that Todd Tiahrt has done more for the privacy protection of law-abiding citizens than any other legislator and has faced more persecution from the left.

While this smearing of our good name is deplorable, I am proud of Todd's courage and commitment to the 2nd Amendment and I support him. Where is the support from all the other legislators that the NRA rates as having an “A” on their report cards? Why don't they speak out in defense of privacy? Why does Todd face these ads and billboards alone?

Todd Tiahrt deserves the vote and support of every citizen committed to the 2nd Amendment.

On Sunday, Elsha and I attended the KSRA shoot outside Hutch. We both got pointers from attending instructors and law officers in the handling of a firearm, self defense, and safety. (How'd I do?)

Bob and Patricia Stoneking were patient teachers and I really enjoyed learning from them.

At the end of our time together I was eager to pay my membership to the Kansas State Rifle Association and Elsha joined too. Thanks to the Stonekings, and the new friends at the KSRA.

Inside a Day with "The Architect"

I wasn't at the Karl Rove events, but I got the scoop from my mom last night and will try to do last Saturday justice.

Karl Rove was awesome and the events had great turnouts despite thunderstorms in KC and a baking hot rally in Wichita. For an "objective" perspective, check out the KC Star "Prime Buzz" and KSN News stories below.

My mom said she found Karl to be sharp, warm, and funny, teasing her "mercilessly." (Don’t worry, she dished it right back and said he can take it.) Karl stayed up to speed by following news on his laptop during the trip down to Wichita.

Between events, when the media reported Moran's retort that "like Todd Tiahrt, [Rove's] been in Washington a long time," Karl asked, "when was Jerry elected again? 1996?!"

Karl laughed, "I came in 2001! He's been there longer than me!"

As a side note, Jerry Moran came to Washington just two years after my dad but he did spend a summer interning for former Rep. Keith Sebelius. So for the record, my dad has only been in Washington 1.75 years longer than Jerry. I'm not sure there's a big difference between 15 years and 13.25 years, but I digress.

Back to Rove... He braved the KC storms and stayed long after the Wichita rally to sign books in the sweltering airplane hangar at Jabara. My mom said the best part of the day was watching how relaxed my dad and Karl were together and how much Dad enjoyed having him in Kansas.

Rove, "The Architect," rips Moran, calls Tiahrt the right guy for Kansas

In a blinding thunderstorm in Overland Park this morning, former White House political guru Karl Rove laid into Republican Senate candidate Jerry Moran, calling him a what's-in-it-for-me politician.

"It was all about him," Rove said in an interview with Prime Buzz."In-between him and a camera and in-between him and applause was not a great place to be."

Rove, nicknamed "The Architect" for his role in helping George W. Bush win two terms in the White House, endorsed Moran's rival in the Republican Senate primary, Todd Tiahrt.

Rove said Tiahrt of Wichita was principled and "not compliant."

"At least you know where he's coming from," Rove said. "With Moran, it's like, `What is his game?'"

Rove, who's touring the nation to promote his new book, said he's endorsed only for two Republican Senate candidates this cycle: Tiahrt and Marco Rubio of Florida who is a friend.

In a statement released Saturday, Moran spokesman Dan Conston said it was "no secret" that Rove would stump for his rival because Rove doesn't like Moran.

"Jerry stood up to him," Conston said. "Karl’s job was to line up votes to pass the President’s agenda and while Jerry agreed with much of the Bush agenda, he put his foot down against major increases in spending and government bureaucracy, like opposing No Child Left Behind.

"If you didn’t do what Karl Rove wanted you to do 100 percent of the time, you were punished for it. Well, that’s not a democracy and Jerry Moran is nobody’s lapdog. He wouldn’t be bullied."

Rove and Tiahrt spoke in a ferocious downpour outside Johnson County Republican headquarters at 126th and Metcalf. With his pants already soaked, Tiahrt joked it was the "event from hell" and said to a hearty crowd of a couple hundred, "I can tell you're not fair-weather fans."

Said Rove, "I"m from Texas, so we never curse the rain."

Rove was headed to Wichita later Saturday for a second campaign stop with Tiahrt. Polls show Moran leading in the race. The primary is Aug. 3.

Rove is the second leading Republican leader to criticize Moran. Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert has repeatedly knocked Moran, saying "he was never there."

"I mean, he’d always be out there grabbing a headline," Hastert said, "but he was never there in my experience of doing the hard work to make things happen.”

In the interview, Rove was particularly harsh on Moran for how the congressman approached a 2001 bill on trade promotion authority that Rove said was aimed at knocking down trade barriers and would have helped Moran's rural western Kansas district.

Rove said Moran tried to cut a deal on the bill, offering to back it, but only if the president or Commerce Secretary Don Evans agreed to come to Kansas to help Moran raise campaign money.

Rove said the idea was ridiculous because Moran already had a big cash-on-hand total and likely wouldn't face a serious opponent. Moran was from one of the safest Republican districts in the nation.

"It was, 'What's in it for me?'" Rove said of Moran. He said Moran told him, "You've got to give the president to me in a safe Republican district or the secretary of commerce to me in a safe Republican district to do a fundraiser."

The Bush team eventually pressed a North Carolina Republican to vote for the bill, which resulted in its narrow passage. (Moran's campaign said Moran eventually voted to back the bill).

Rove also dinged Moran for being one of 12 Republicans who opposed Bush's original $726 billion tax cut.

Rove said the first vote was seen as a negotiating stance with the Senate, which was sure to knock down the total cut. Moran eventually backed a $350 billion tax cut.

"He was difficult to deal with," Rove said of Moran.

Karl Rove Endorses Todd Tiahrt

WICHITA, Kansas (KSN) -- Former President George W. Bush's right-hand-man has endorsed Rep. Todd Tiahrt in his bid for U.S. Senate.

"We got to know each other not just professionally but personally and then I got to see him upclose," said Rove. "He's a star inside the Republican house caucus, he's not flashy. You're not going to see him running to the cameras. You're going to see him working behind the scenes."

Rove and Tiahrt held rallies together Saturday in Wichita and Overland Park.

Tiahrt is running against Rep. Jerry Moran in the Republican primary. Moran's campaign released a statement saying: “We have great respect for Karl Rove, but Karl Rove doesn’t live in Kansas, he doesn’t know Kansas like Jerry Moran does, and like Todd Tiahrt, he’s been in Washington a long time.”

The Republican primary is set for August.

The trail took the Tiahrt Campaign deep into Southeast Kansas for a Meet and Greet at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Crossland. It was great to get better acquainted with the Crossland family in a beautiful outdoor setting. Virginia Crossland, the mother of the family, is a Vicki too.

The hot afternoon sun was blocked by a beautiful barn, large oak trees with hanging flower baskets, and a big tent with a chandelier in the center. Tables were covered in white, topped with tan burlap, and tied with raffia. We enjoyed pork loin or turkey, steamed veggies, garlic mashed potatoes. But the real highlight was seeing Dick Morris in person and hearing his predictions for upcoming elections.
He told the crowd Republicans will win back the House and Senate, but it isn't enough to elect just any Republican. We need fighters like Todd Tiahrt.

Dick visited with Todd about the importance of the Tea Party movement nation-wide and how fortunate we are to have the support of the three Tea Party movements in Kansas.

We couldn't agree more.

Todd Tiahrt was the only individual in the US Senate race who took part in our vetting process. Many people talked with Moran about taking part in our vetting process, but even though he always said he would do it, he never did.

I do not want a Senator representing me that will say one thing to my face and then do another. That is exactly what Moran did.

Tiahrt, on the other hand, participated in our vetting process and answered all of the questions. I was not in 100% agreement with all of his answers, but he did explain himself and had good reasons for why he said what he said.

It's parade season! I have really funny memories of walking in parades as kids with my brothers accidentally throwing candy so hard it would bounce off the pavement (or people!).

This week took Elsha's well-miled Explorer to McPherson and Hutchinson. We met some great conservative workers, David and Jayme O'Dell in McPherson, and added to our Facebook friends of younger supporters. The Bohnenblust sisters, Jessica and Jody are energized and eager to start a dress shop. They express dismay at government stealing their future through debt, bailouts and taxes. Not only did they come to the meet and greet, they've walked a parade for Todd and this week Jody showed me how to type T<3 which makes a heart on Facebook!

McPherson is a great small town with good people. We really enjoyed coffee at The Cake Lady and then on to the interview at the local McPherson Sentinel. I was hoping to meet their blogger but he was out sick. Elsha and I both enjoyed meeting Katie Stockstill who did the interview and remarked at what a busy time this campaign season is with so many open seats. She's right, this is an historic year.

And speaking of history, it was a pleasure to see one of Jerry Moran's many earmark projects. (We actually visited two of Jerry's earmarks in two hours – we listened to debates at Hutch Community College and were surprised when the moderator noted HCC received government funds through Jerry Moran's earmark requests.)

The McPherson Opera house is indeed the gem of Main Street. We met director John Holecek and quickly counted him a kindred spirit.

John gave us a great tour of the historic preservation of what is now the place for great entertainment, wonderful meeting space and education opportunity. It’s nice to see when federal money works for taxpaying citizens. We urge Kansans and out-of-staters alike to visit the McPherson Opera House and look forward to going back.

Then for a little sustenance we headed to The Courtyard on Main where owner Judith Dobson introduced us to her family running the restaurant. We chose to sit inside but customers can also sit in the Italian style courtyard, or charming side-rooms like the Milan. There is also a fabulous space on the roof! Debbie is quite an entrepreneur. Anyone interested in beautiful poured concrete and old world paint treatments should go for a look around and ideas. The food is good too.

These businesses are bustling and we are glad of it. Women in Kansas are concerned about jobs, and the economy. They wonder if they will continue to be able to pay the mortgage for their families, and if their health insurance is any good now. They worry about savings accounts and retirement accounts. When they see their taxes going up and Topeka and Washington DC wasting their money, it makes their blood boil.

Each time he voted to raise income, property and sales taxes, Jerry Moran hurt business, farms and families. His vote against repealing the death tax hurts farmers and others who desire to leave their land and homes to their heirs. Women are infuriated that when death comes, the grieving family must deal not only with the mortuary, but also the taxman. Jerry voted against the Bush tax cuts and now, he wants to tax the internet, too.

Tax hikes are wrong for these business owners, for families, and for young women like Jessie and Jody. The people of McPherson can spend their money more wisely than government can.

Vicki Tiahrt learning ropes of campaign trail

McPherson, Kan. - During previous elections, Rep. Todd Tiahrt of Goddard has hit the campaign trail on his own. But this campaign, he's got a running mate, of sorts.

Tiahrt's wife, Vicki, has been making stops throughout Kansas, focusing on smaller communities and working to connect with women and minorities.

"I've never been this engaged with the voters before because I have had children at home during previous races," Tiahrt said.

But the "state of the country" and its impact on women and families has inspired Vicki Tiahrt to hit the road and help spread her husband's message.

"It certainly helps having more faces out there," she said. "Every volunteer helps. We are running a grassroots campaign. Jerry (Moran) has the money and the Washington establishment. We are depending on grassroots efforts and Todd's consistent conservative message."

Nothing is Certain but Death and Taxes...and Voting Records

They say time flies when you’re having fun, but it goes warp speed when you’re campaigning.

Several days ago, I spoke at the Topeka 912 Project’s monthly meeting. The topic – taxes. The Kansas legislature had just passed one of the highest sales tax rates in the nation and Kansans were unhappy!

I told the crowd that a few days before the meeting, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce gave my dad the highest lifetime rating in the Kansas House delegation for being the most supportive of pro-business and job growth legislation.

My dad received this recognition because he knows we have to build the economy from the ground up, not from the government down and he has courageously fought in Washington for free market principles, for less spending, and for lower taxes.

The Kansas legislature’s sales tax increase comes at a time when Kansans can least afford higher taxes. We’ve never seen higher taxes as a solution. That’s why my dad has never voted for a tax increase - not once.

Throughout his legislative career, during his time in Topeka, and during his time in Washington, he has never once voted for a tax increase.

As you may have seen on TV today, my Dad is the only Conservative candidate in the Senate race that can say that.

Dale Chaffee was the keynote speaker at the meeting that night. People affectionately call him “The Geezer” but Dale is sharp as a whip and he made a persuasive appeal for implementing the “Fair Tax” (an alternative to all federal income taxes. See http://www.fairtax.org/ for more info).

Dale also mentioned the Primary race and said Kansans need to make their choice and “get behind your candidate, knock on some doors, donate some money, and work hard for your guy.”

Dale said all this while wearing a Tiahrt for Senate sticker on his jacket :)

It was exciting to be in Topeka right on the heels of the tax increase and to see firsthand that people are paying attention to tax votes.

Kansas deserves a leader who will fight tax increases and who believes the best way to recover our economy is by trusting people to spend their money more wisely than the government spends it.

This One's For The Girls

Last week's trail took me to Washington to lend a hand to RNC Co-Chair Jan Larimer and the Women's Summit http://www.rncwomen.com/.

Our mission: to recruit and sustain a strong base of women activists to build the Republican Party and ultimately win elections.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) gave a compelling presentation that the GOP must be the party that draws women. Here is an excerpt:

Did you know that in America today, 2 out of 3 new businesses are started by women? Or that 23 million Americans are employed by women-owned businesses?

According to the author Tom Peters in his book, Re-Imagine:

• Women control 51% of the New York Stock Exchange

• Women manage 83% of the household income

• Women are responsible for 85% of all purchasing of goods and services in the U.S. which represents $6 billion; women purchase for themselves, their families, and their companies

• Women will inherit 85-90% of the nation’s wealth in the next 10 years, which amounts to $133 trillion

• There are 5 million more women than men in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Census and Small Business Administration:

• Women are starting businesses at twice the rate of men

Career advancement and financial independence for women in business is flourishing. But this means that the President’s “spend-and-borrow” economic policies have had a disproportionately negative impact on American women.

RNC Co-Chair Jan Larimer asked for a political wife perspective for the afternoon's breakout sessions. Susan Allen (wife of former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator, George Allen), Nancy Schulze (wife of former Rep. Dick Schulze of PA) and I shared our experience and encouragement to help women make a difference in politics.

Conservatives Need a Warrior, and We've Got Just the Guy

The Kansas Trail led to Johnson County this Monday. The North East Johnson County Republican Women's Club has a regular luncheon packed full of "Fast Five" stump speeches, a key note speaker, introduction of members' guests, business meeting, and yes, lunch!

When one Fast Five speaker/candidate started his talk with, "I'll be brief, I know you aren't here to listen to the politicians," Club members responded with a resounding, "Oh yes we are!"

These ladies mean business!

They graciously fit me into the Fast Five lineup and let me share a little about my dad's race for Senate.

I talked about how interesting this election year has been so far and that Republicans have a real chance at winning back the majority.

I also talked about the American Conservative Union's ranking of Members of Congress. The ACU ranked my dad as the most conservative member of the Kansas delegation. The ACU Chairman also endorsed my dad for Senate and said "Conservatives need warriors like Todd Tiahrt."

America needs warriors. We need warriors to go up against Obama and Pelosi's agendas. The Senate needs warriors to fight Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer. The ACU Chairman also said "Anyone can have a conservative year or two when they are running for office, but Todd has consistently been a leader for conservative causes from day one."

My dad has been an effective Congressman and now he's ready to take his fight into the Senate. The House of Representatives has 435 members. The Senate only has 100. This means a Senator can be four times as effective as a Congressman - from crafting bills in small committees to using the filibuster to block a bad bill on the Senate floor.

Conservatives need a warrior. And Kansas voters have the opportunity to send one to the Senate on August 3.

From Her Hands to Our Hearts

Life is full of surprise encounters and they seem to happen more rapidly during campaign season. One is Cynthia Daugherty. She’s retired military and has a charming smile.

Cindy delights in making quilts and cleverly creates them to fit the occasion. At a townhall meeting in Johnson County this spring, she presented us with this quilt.

This one uses a campaign t-shirt – the trademark of the Tiahrt campaign through the years. Rep. Dan Glickman commented after his defeat in 1994, "There were just too many red t-shirts!"

Cindy found fabric very much like the Tiahrt logo that helps with the pronunciation of a difficult spelling. The patriotic flag-waving heart is there in the fabric and the quilting repeats the heart pattern. The back of the quilt has a cowboy because Cindy said "you’re from out west."

In a recent email, Cindy wrote, “Quilts bring a strong sense of love and comfort, and that is why I love making them for good people, like the Tiahrt family.”

We are blessed to find such dear friends along the Kansas Trail.

Vicki Tiahrt dines, discusses issues with College Republicans

In the midst of her husband’s campaign for U.S. senator, Vicki Tiahrt stopped by K-State yesterday evening to visit. At Houlihan’s, she dined with members from the K-State College Republicans organization and other students who are interested in the 2010 congressional elections. Her visit at K-State was one of many she has made across Kansas as she visits college campuses.

The dinner, more of an informal gathering of politically motivated students than a campaign rally, featured discussions between her and students about current issues affecting Kansas. Tiarht said the experience of visiting college students has been rewarding. The responses from her visits have shown her that students are aware of political issues and want to make a difference.

“Conventional wisdom tells us that college students don’t matter,” Tiahrt said. “That’s not true.”

She said Kansas students are “willing to take a stand with some blow back” and that they “don’t blink” in the face of opposition. Asked what she had hoped to gain from her visit to Manhattan, Tiahrt said she hoped to “have fun and make some new Facebook friends.” That lighthearted motive set the tone for the dinner as she allowed the students to discuss issues freely and openly.

Shelby Danielsen, president of the College Republicans, said the idea was to visit with Tiahrt on a more personal level than in a formal meeting where she would stand and speak to an audience. Danielson said it was the first time the College Republicans have met Tiahrt as a group.

The Kansas Federation of College Republicans recently endorsed Todd Tiahrt for his senatorial campaign. Vicki Tiahrt said that they are honored to have the endorsement and proud the College Republicans were using their voice to endorse a candidate.

“I think she’s awesome,” said Page Routhier, president of the KFCR, of Tiahrt. “She didn’t focus too much on the campaign and allowed us to focus on our concerns and give her ideas.”

Tiahrt closed her meeting with a speech to the group of people that turned out at the dinner. She spoke about how the voices of students do not go unheard and polled the group about how many of them are considering running for election someday. To the several who raised their hands, she offered some advice, and told the students not to let money dictate their decision of whether or not to run for office.

Throughout the night, she also offered several Todd Tiahrt campaign stories from the 1990s. Most of the students would not remember the early campaigns, she said. Most notably, she recounted the 1994 election, Todd Tiahrt’s first campaign, against opponent Dan Glickman. The race was seen by critics as an unlikely win for any Republican and Glickman had superior funding, yet Todd Tiahrt won the election with 54 percent of the vote.

Courtney Hall, junior in feed science and management, said she attended the dinner gathering because she saw it as an opportunity to socialize with other college students interested in politics. She also wanted to “get to know Vicki and what she has to say.”

“Patriotism is alive and well in Kansas,” Tiahrt said. “K-State students are very bold.”

Tiahrt said in an interview that he wasn't surprised by the Farm Bureau's decision. He attributed it to the fact Moran's First District covers 69 counties, while his district contains 11 counties. County-by-county voting on a Farm Bureau endorsement plays in Moran's favor, he said.

He questioned Moran's leadership on the House Agriculture Committee, suggesting more aggressive advocacy was necessary to secure farm interests in Washington.

"I learned about farm policy in the seat of a tractor, not in committee," Tiahrt said.

Tiahrt, of Goddard, was visiting a Boeing tanker simulator parked outside the Statehouse at the same time Moran was accepting the Farm Bureau endorsement on the 13th floor of a building overlooking the Capitol.

In the battle for endorsements, Tiahrt has earned support of political action committees with Kansans for Life and the Family Research Council.

Augusta, Kan. — Vicki Tiahrt, wife of Todd Tiahrt, Republican 4th District Congressman who is locked in a fight against Jerry Moran (R-Hays) for Sen. Sam Brownback’s U.S. Senate seat, is on the campaign trail making appearances around the state and last week she stopped in Augusta. She shared a woman’s perspective with Gazette reporter, Belinda Larsen.

Q. The Senate race has gotten negative. How hard is it for you to hear negative things about your husband?
A. I’ve been at this a long time and developed a thick skin. With the Internet and blog comments it can get pretty rough. But I’m older, wiser and I pick my battles.

Q. What do you see as your role on the campaign?
A. Women have unique perspectives. Something is happening with our gender. At least 55 percent of those attending TEA parties are women. Women are very responsive. They are leaving the kitchens and jobs and making their way to the public arena. This is very good for our country. We are encouraging women, as well as minorities and youth. These groups have been marginalized and deserve a place at the table. The passion is there. The minority community may be a little more hesitant.
We’re determined to build friendships and relationships. They all need to lift their voices and America needs to hear.
Our young people have been ignored. We’ve found that when we reach out that they are very informed. They bring a new energy and any campaign would be foolish to ignore them.

Q. What are the most important issues for you?
A. The economy and jobs. Three quarters of the U.S. households have women contributing to the household. The economy is definitely impacting moms and kids.

Q. Can you share your favorite story about Todd helping a constituent?
A. Todd has a great staff working with him and almost every day someone calls with problems. But, I would have to say the Burnhams (Kansas missionaries taken hostage by terrorists in the Philippines) come to mind first. Kansans carried that situation in their hearts. We were shocked that people could be taken hostage. Todd stepped up and was vocal when America could not rescue them due to the rules of engagement in dealing with terrorists.
He works hard, he’s motivated, aggressive and a fighter -- he can be a bull dog. Kansas has real needs and he’s always aware of those needs.
Federal help is needed to deal with the meth labs; there are communities that don’t have resources to to update water treatment and sanitation systems -- if you don’t have a Todd Tiahrt to get those funds, those communities lose out.
Todd stepped up and assisted with getting $1 million to help with the technology in the BTK case, which resulted in the capture and arrest of Dennis Rader a couple of weeks later.
There is a lot of talk about earmarks. Earmarks are not new spending -- that money is on the table already going somewhere -- he strongly believes in targeting the money wisely.

Q. Another important issue for you is literacy?
I love books and have always enjoyed reading. I’ve been involved with The Big Read program in Wichita. Just this morning I read to some second graders. (Vicki is the Honorary Chair of The Big Read program in Wichita. The Big Read was started by the National Endowment for the Arts to restore reading to the American culture after a study showed literary reading declining rapidly in America. The Kansas Library Association and the Mountain Plains Library Association noted Vicki's work for literacy by naming her the 2009 Emerging Leader Library Advocate award winner.). We have to encourage Kansans to keep reading and to be life-long learners. It’s important to have an informed electorate.
Kansans are smart and well-informed. You give them information and they’ll make the right choice. I’m always amazed at how informed people in Kansas are.

Q. If you weren’t married to him, what would be your favorite thing about Todd Tiahrt?
A. What an interesting question!
He has a wicked sense of humor...and I’ve always liked his walk. He has a football player walk. The first time I saw him at college, it was his walk I noticed.
Todd is a kind person. Whenever he has toured weather-damaged areas around the state, he has been touched by the impact on his fellow Kansans. It always touches his heart.
Todd’s efforts have always been to do the right thing with his constituents’ best interests in mind.

Ok, so the other guy has his Washington DC roommates/Senators and a laundry list of KS-2nd District office holders.

But, we've got College Republicans, Tea Partiers, Pro-Lifers, Conservative leaders, and a host of unpaid and enthusiastic Twitter-ers, "community organizers," yard sign deliverers, door knockers, parade walkers, and various other volunteers that define "fire in the belly."

These people are movers and shakers and just being around them gives us reassurance about the future of our nation.

We very gratefully added the Kansas Federation of College Republicans to Team Tiahrt this week.

Brandon West, Kansas State, said this about the state federation's decision to vote on an endorsement, "The issues that College Republicans believe in are worth taking a proactive stance on, and we must ultimately decide which candidate best defends and upholds those values.”

A majority of state delegates voted for Tiahrt, while three others voted for no endorsement. None voted to endorse any other Republican candidates. The Federation remains committed to fostering debate and discussion among College Republican chapters in the State of Kansas.

“We voted for Tiahrt's endorsement because we as CRs need a Senator who will work with us in promoting our political agenda on Capitol Hill. As a Congressman, Tiahrt has proven that he respects the College Republicans as young Kansas leaders and considers us a viable political entity that should not be ignored,” said West.

The Trail Mix

Every fun campaign needs a few theme songs. When American hero and Kansas's favorite son, Sen. Dole ran for President in '96, we sang "I'm a Dole Man!" to the Blues Brothers.

So when I told my mom I wanted to post a "Trail Mix" she introduced me to Jace Mills, a Winfield, KS high school student that put together a great "meet and greet" earlier this week.

I love Tom Petty's original (Jace's pick), but Johnny Cash has a special place in my heart. I grew up listening to my uncle Rick Holland (from Pratt, KS) play Folsom Prison Blues. And we call my dad the "man in black." He sports black jeans and a black button down pretty often.

This is my addition. My family joked that this was our theme song back when we first entered politics. When my dad first ran for office it was against an incumbent. When he was elected to Congress, he beat an 18-year incumbent. My dad has always had tough races, and in Washington DC he has never cowered from a tough legislative fight. "You can bet that he will stand his ground." I'm dedicating this one to all the great conservative candidates running for office out there and the awesome grassroots support behind them.

Friday, April 23, found Vicki Tiahrt at Isely Traditional Magnet Elementary School in Wichita. The school motto: Traditional Formula + Responsibility = Results.

We were met by Jane Walker, Principal; Lisa Beun, 2nd grade teacher; Angelina Daniel, 2nd grade teacher; and several parents including Angela Lovelace who put this event together.

Vicki read to the 2nd graders out loud making sure that they were involved in the stories. She also met Flat Stanley who came to visit from Texas. With Flat Stanley, Vicki had the 2nd graders make up their own story going on an imaginary trip.

If you want your children to read then you'd better be reading, too. Nothing like a good example to help with good habits is there? Talk about the latest book you're reading over the dinner table. Ask what everyone else is reading. Make books available in your home, play books on tape or CD instead of the radio when you're in the car. Whatever it takes to cultivate an atmosphere of learning in your home.

Kansas State Wildcats Continue to Make Headlines

The demographic that supposedly isn’t interested in politics is confounding everything. Leave it to the college crowd to leave the older generation astounded. All the pundits say college kids can't be counted on, they don't show up for the campaign's heavy lifting and they don't vote. As Todd says "Wrong-O!"

Step into a CR group and the energy makes the air crackle. They are smart, funny, know what they believe, and they’re not afraid to own their conservatism.

Kansas CRs are leading this campaign season. They show up at Kansas Day in Topeka, at our meet and greets, volunteer in our HQs and invite us onto their campuses. In one case, they have invited until they are blue in the face, but still determined, they scheduled debates and had the audacity to press release it.

Yesterday Kansas State College Republicans broke the mold and made their first ever endorsement in a primary. We are honored that they sought out both candidates, looked them over, deliberated and endorsed Todd Tiahrt for United States Senate. Here you'll find their reasons in a very nice press release.

Invading the Big First

CNN invaded my small hometown of Pratt, KS to do a piece on jobs during this recession in America.

They interviewed the owners of Cannonball which manufactures a fully automated hay loader. Terry invented this piece of farm equipment and the Shrags made their business go by growing slowly and staying out of debt. Congratulations to Terry and Debbie Shrag for your success and contribution to a strong economy.

I loved this clip from my hometown and it got me thinking about the jobs I worked while growing up in this town of 6,000. Babysitting on Hillside Street when I was in elementary school gave me some pocket money and taught me that I was a Republican – it was good to work and to reap the rewards of my work.

While at Liberty Jr. High our neighbor within walking distance, Frank Zimmerman, needed someone to sell milk at his dairy farm. Folks brought their own jars and I filled them up with whole milk so fresh 3 hours before it was KS grass!

During my years at PHS, I worked a short stint at the front desk of Quality Laundry. Between customers I did a little bookkeeping and helped fold some clothes. Lyda Pinkston worked there too and I always enjoyed her since I was a little girl sitting beside her in church while Mom sang in the choir. She could make dolls out of her pretty pressed hankies to entertain my brother Rick and me. She could fold more than hankies, she took hospital sheets so hot we could hardly handle them and they were neatly folded and stacked for delivery in no time.

The day after graduation, John Wehr hired me at Safeway. I checked groceries through PCC with one of my best friends Janie Luther. And I worked a little with Janie’s mom, Bonnie Bell Luther, at Alco. John Luther suggested Bell Telephone and I got on as Operator 10 on the old cord board and worked my way through the rest of my college, even transferring to the Bell office in Springfield, MO so I could graduate from Evangel University.

CNN skillfully highlights the KS work ethic that is the answer to our economic recovery. America needs to get going again and that motivates me to work hard for Todd’s election to the U.S. Senate.

He has never raised taxes on hardworking Kansans – never, not a single time. His opponent has voted for 12 tax increases. When politicians raise taxes, jobs are driven out of Kansas and out of America. It’s as simple as that.

Mike Pence Endorses Todd

We are honored to have the endorsement of fellow Tea Party Hero, Mike Pence. Mike is the House Republican Conference Chairman and a favorite spokesman on television.

Mike's wife, Karen, has been a friend for several years. Karen conducted the New Spouse Orientation for me in 2005-2006 when I was President of the historic Congressional Club.

This bipartisan service organization helps families of Members of Congress navigate life in elected office. Karen showed real conservative leadership representing the values of their home state of Indiana as she shared the advantages of families staying together as the Member of Congress serves in Washington DC.

She also presented each new spouse with a wonderful watercolor of the historic Clubhouse built in 1914 (as shown in the sketch here, courtesy of the Library of Congress).

The Club and Clubhouse operate with no tax dollars - we pay dues, rent out our building for weddings, and publish a cookbook of recipes from Members and families. Names from the guest register include Kansans Amelia Earhart and President Ike & Mamie Eisenhower.

News from the Trail in Hutch

Hutch News treated me fairly and visiting there was an interesting experience. Mary Clarkin took notes the old fashioned way. There is something terrifyingly beautiful about the reporter's little notebook and the sound of the pencil feverishly jotting notes.

Mary and I are the same age and discovered we know many of the same families in the West Sedgwick County area. Elsha discovered another friend working at Hutch News whom she hadn't visited with for years. Surprise discoveries on the trail. Priceless.

Once when Vicki Tiahrt went to a tea party in Kansas, she carried a homemade sign that read, "Mama ain't happy."

She still isn't happy with federal government spending she says is "out of control" and with a government grown too big and trying to do too much.

Tiahrt, wife of U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, who is running for the party's nomination in the U.S. Senate rate, came to Hutchinson on Thursday to attend a tea party rally, while her husband campaigned in the Kansas City area.

Campaigning on behalf of her husband is a full-time job for Tiahrt, with the primary election less than four months away. U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Hays, outpaces Tiahrt in fundraising and polling, but Vicki Tiahrt said she believes "Todd is the right person" for the Senate, and she takes encouragement from past races.

Rep. Tiahrt upset Democratic incumbent Rep. Dan Glickman, D-Wichita, in 1994, although Glickman was ahead by 30 points in Septemeber before that November election. Also, Glickman's campaign spent more than $1 million, while the Tiahrt campaign spent less than $225,000, she recalled.

As long as the Tiahrt campaign can put together a grassroots effort, Vicki Tiahrt said, "I think we can win."

On the campaign trail, Vicki Tiahrt has met young Republicans and communicates on such social networking sites as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

It's fun to see the interest young people have in the race, Tiahrt said. She also noted President Barack Obama's campaign in 2008, using the Internet to raise sums and connect with voters, showed how campaigns are changing.

Vicki Tiahrt isn't shy about taking aim at Moran's record in her comments on Twitter, where statements are limited to 140 characters. "Tax day," she noted on Twitter Thursday, reminding that Tiahrt "has never voted 4 a tax hike ever," while "Moran voted 12 times 2 raise" state and federal taxes.

"He knows that I'm passionate and outspoken," Vicki Tiahrt said of her husband of 33 years, and he doesn't try to block her commentary.

Todd is "progressive," she said, admitting she didn't like to use that word because of its political connotations - Tiahrt is running as the "real conservative" in the race.

"Todd doesn't put people in a box," she continued, and "he doesn't put me in a box."

Vicki Tiahrt was in Washington, D.C., when the U.S. House voted on health care reform, the measure passing with no Republican votes. Her husband was on the floor of the House for most of the debate, she said, while Moran "only came onto the floor to vote."

Vicki Tiahrt has met her counterpart, Robba Moran, on the campaign trail, and calls her "gracious." Both Tiahrt and Moran children also have been on the trail, and Tiahrt says she admires the Moran family.

"Todd and Jerry respect each other," she said, and primary races are "uncomfortable."

"But you determine the future of the party," she said, by making comparisons and voting.

Women all over Kansas tell me "I've never voted before" or "I've never been political before". But things have changed and even teaparties have taken on a whole new meaning. 55% of the teaparty attendees are women.

We used to have to wonder what women were thinking about politics. But no more. Signs they made at their kitchen table using their children's and grandchildren's school supplies cleverly share their beliefs with the world.
